Madison County Schools
Secondary Teacher of the Year 2008-2009

My current position with Madison County Schools provides me with the opportunity to teach two Advanced Placement (AP) / Dual Enrollment Biology classes for Sparkman High School.  My classes are taught in the Sparkman Ninth Grade School.  The second part of my day is fulfilling the obligations as  Lead Teacher in Science - Biology.  In this role, I work with middle school and high school Science teachers in the "Laying the Foundations" program implemented this year with grant money received from A+ College Ready.

I attended John C. Calhoun Community College and graduated from Athens State University in 1992 with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education in Biology and Psychology along with an endorsement in Middle School Science.  In August 1999, I  received my Master's Degree from the University of Alabama in Secondary Education Biology.

My teaching career began in 1992 as a Lab Instructor at Calhoun Community College (CCC).  I held this position until 2005 when I became an adjunct faculty member at CCC teaching Biology 103.  In 1993, I began my teaching career with the Madison County School System at Madison Cross Roads teaching Sixth Grade Science.  I transferred, along with my colleagues, to the newly formed Sparkman Middle School in 1999.  While at SMS, I taught Sixth and Eighth Grade Science and was named "Teacher of the Year" in 2002 and 2003.  Since 2002, I have been nominated four times by various students to be recognized in the "Who's Who Among Teachers". With the exception of teaching at Huntsville High School last year, I have been teaching Biology classes at Sparkman High School since January 2004.  In November 2007, I was named SHS's "Teacher of the Year".

Field Experiences

One of the things that I enjoy about my job is the ability to participate in workshops .  I have had the opportunity to travel to places that enable me to gain knowledge about the things that I teach.  After receiving a STARS Grant from UAH, in June 2007 I traveled with colleagues, Scott and Debbie McMickin and Deborah Carpenter, to Fiji to study the coral reefs.  I was selected as one of 30 teachers to participate in a week-long study of the extremophiles that are the inhabitants at the hotsprings and pools in Yellowstone National Park.

Because I enjoy learning from field experiences, I enjoy taking my students on trips to reinforce the concepts discussed in class.  This semester, my students will have the opportunity to interact with various aquatic animals at the Wetland's Edge Environment Center in Decatur, AL.  A field trip the the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in Dauphin Island, AL to study salt marsh and beach communities is planned for April 2008.
